Energy most certainly can make or break a show. Nina Athanasiou mastered the infusion of energy in the clothing, models, and theme, making her production one of the most pleasing showcases in all of fashion week.
“This was my first single event, so I was very nervous,” Athanasiou explained after her collection’s debut. As each piece was showcased the catwalk, a bit of nervousness settled due to audience reaction. It is important to note the purposeful selection of models for Athanasiou; each one had strong, distinct walks. Not to mention, supermodel Shaun Ross received a round of applause and sporadic screams from fans as he closed the show.
The use of colors and fabrics followed Athanasiou’s intended theme. “When I was a little girl, I was always in the garden and outside. I was collecting insects and [kept] them in my room. So it was a lot about me and childhood and memory. It was very private.”
Earthtones displayed validated Athanasiou’s story. Fabrics such as leather and silks also added to the nature theme. Furthering this aspect of her childhood, she explained her dad’s surgical background and mentioned that she “was always going through his stuff.” Thus, for the first time, Athanasiou experimented with latex. She stressed the importance of her collection relating back to childhood memories.
Notable pieces of Athanasiou’s Spring/Summer ’15 collection include her personal favorite, the green silk dress with the brown leather belt and fly on the neck, and the finale piece, worn by Ross: a two piece suit with brown, orange, and tan nature accents. There was much to be observed throughout the whole collection. Athanasiou made her future goals known. “I’m really hoping that I can get into some boutiques here in New York. That would be a dream come true.” She is well on her way to achieving her goal.
