Only three seasons after her debut, Katharine Polk continues to prove her design merit with another fresh and beautiful Houghton collection. Guests overlooked the sun-soaked High Line from the patio of the Standard Hotel before models strutted down an outdoor runway decorated with creeping ivy and potted trees. Polk was inspired by the beach breeze while on vacation in Miami, both atmospherically and literally - woven fabrics imitated the basketweave patterns of classic white pool chairs. Silk, crepe, and chiffon floated down the runway in soft, feminine shapes. Shades of white and creme were paired with romantic pastels, with several garments in a gold-embroidered floral print. The glittering embroidery and occasional black piece lent a luxe edge to an otherwise sweet and girly collection. Organza overlays and pleats provided contrasting textures, while the color scheme tied together a quintessentially spring collection.
Models walked in HOUGHTON x Birkenstock sandals, a nod to Polk’s design reach; the shoe collaboration and Houghton wedding line are examples of her ever-expanding fashion capabilities. Loose, low ponies were styled by Loreal, while MAC gave the models fresh faces with flushed cheeks. Houghton has impressed both press and consumer since its 2012 release, and the Spring/Summer ’14 Collection is a good indication that Polk has no intention to disappoint.
